OBJECTIVE: Aim of the study is to assess the etiology, demographic factors, severity and outcome of ocular trauma
METHODS: In this prospective study 100 victims of ocular injury were studied over a period of 1 year.
RESULTS: 75% victims were male. The age ranged from 6 to 65 years, maximum (40%) were in 15-30 years age group. Most (80%) cases occurred outdoors. The leading mechanism for assault was physical force/objects(50%), chemical(14%) and thermal burn(8%). The 18% victim reported injury with sharp objects like knife & 10% were injured by firearms. The left eye was involved in 48%, right eye in 39%, both eyes 13% of cases. Final visual outcome was normal (6/6 to 6/18) in 25% cases, visual impairment (VA< 6/18 to 3/60) in 35% cases and blindness (VA<3/60 to NPL) in 35%.5 patients underwent enucleation or eviscertation.
CONCLUSION: Males are prone to assault related ocular injuries mostly physical assaults. Left eye involvement was more than the right eye.
