Purpose: To mark the barriers to follow up compliance among the contactable Diabetic patients of a rural eye hospital.
Methods: A retrospective analysis of medical records of 503 patients, examined from January to August 2013, with no follow up for more than 2 years was done. Out of which only 135 patients could be contacted over telephone with standard way to learn potential barrier to follow up.
Result: Out of 135 patients, 31 were found to engage themselves with cross consultation, 21 declined to participate and 9 reported to have died. Out of left 74, 62(83.78%) were found to have poor knowledge about the disease, 4(0.05%) could not afford the cost, 3(0.04%) could not travel a long distance, 2(0.02%) could not follow instruction, 2 (0.02%) due to medical illness and 1 (0.01%) who had no attendant.
Conclusion: Poor knowledge regarding the disease was found to be the prime barrier to poor follow up compliance followed by poverty and remoteness from the hospital.
