Aim: An Endocrine Centre based retrospective analysis of the prevalence of DR in Diabetic patients
Method:We analysed 1650 patients of more than 10 years of diabetes who were subjected to screening by single Ophthalmologist in the last five years.
Results: Out of 1650 only 435 had taken any Eye consultation before. According to Glycemic control three groups . HbA1C levels < 7 Gp.A, 7 to 9 Gp.B and > 9 Gp.C. Gp.A had 460, Gp. B had 890 and Gp. C had 300. 82 of Gr.A patients had some retinopathy, of which only 11 had DR requiring intervention.224 of Gr.B patients had some retinopathy of which 67 had DR requiring intervention. 163 Gr.C patients had some retinopathy, of which 79 had DR requiring intervention
Conclusion: Diabetic retinopathy prevalence is around 28% in our study group of more than 10 years duration. Major risk factors being Poorly controlled Diabetes, HTn apart from Duration. Awareness in physicians & patients needs emphasis else the burden of blindness will be enormous.
