FP1572 : Case-Report: Bilateral Anemic Retinopathy in Severe Megaloblastic Anemia

AIM: To report a case of Acute onset diminution of vision in a patient diagnosed with severe megaloblastic anemia.

CASE REPORT: A 23 year old male diagnosed with megaloblastic anemia,undergoing treatment,presented with blurring of vision in both eye since 2 weeks.BCVA in [BE] were 6/60, N24 . Anterior segment examination was within normal limits. Fundus examination showed multiple pre-retinal , intra-retinal and subretinal hemorrhages with roth’s spots in all the four quandrants. Lab investigations,peripheral smear and bone marrow biopsy was suggestive of megaloblastic anemia. After systemic treatment his Hb levels improved, haemorrhages resolved and visual acuity improved.

CONCLUSION: Thourough systemic examination with relevant investigations is mandatory in cases of patients complaining of acute onset diminution of vision and diagnosed with anemia as early detection and prompt initiation of treatment for anemia can prevent vision loss and systemic morbidity and mortality.
