AIM:To study the correlation of dry eye with diabetic retinopathy in patients of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
MATERIAL AND METHODS:A hospital based cross sectional study of 100 diabetic patients who presented to department of ophthalmology was conducted.An ophthalmological examination including visual acuity using Snellen’s chart,anterior segment examination using torch light and slit lamp biomicroscope was carried out.Grading of retinopathy was done by direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy along with slit lamp biomicroscopy using +90D Volk’s lens.Examination for dry eyes included Schirmer’s test,Tear break-up time,Fluorescein staining,impression cytology and predesigned questionnaire.
RESULTSOut of 100 subjects,52 patients (52.0%) suffer from dry eye syndrome.Dry eye syndrome was more frequent in diabetic patients with DR.DR was found in 68 patients (68%), which included 22 patients with mild non proliferative DR (NPDR),24 patients with moderate NPDR,10 patients with severe NPDR and 12 patients with proliferative DR (PDR).
