Aim : To compare the efficacy and safety of post operative administration of topical 0.05% cyclosporin with intraop application of MMC in primary pterygium surgery.

Method : 42 patients undergoing primary pterygium surgery by bare sclera technique were divided in 2 groups. (Group A -22 patients and Group B- 20 patients). Group A received topical 0.05% cyclosporin drops post operatively 6 hourly for 3 months and in group B 0.02% MMC was applied for 2 minutes intraoperatively. The patients were followed for 6 months with regards to recurrence and complications.

Results : Recurrence rate was 22.7% and 15% in group A and group B respectively. Except 1 case of scleral necrosis in group B there was no other major complications in either group.

Conclusion : To prevent postoperative recurrence of pterygium, topical cyclosporin 0.05% can be used as an alternative to intraoperative application of MMC to avoid the toxicity associated with its use.
