PURPOSE : Study the patient profile and identify the risk factors of pterygium in North East India
METHODS : Retrospective analysis of patients undergoing pterygium surgery from January 2013 to December 2015 was done. Demographic data of 770 eyes of 752 patients were included and analysed.
RESULTS : Mean age was 46 yrs, M:F ratio was 1:2, mean exposure to sunlight was 8 hours. Majority of the patients were farmers and fishermen.
CONCLUSION : Majority of the patients were from the age range of 40 to 60 years. Females account for majority of the patients in contrast to other studies done elsewhere. 82.7% were from the valley districts. 55% were from rural population. A population based study needs to be conducted to verify the higher number of females.
