INTRODUCTION:Radiation retinopathy(RR) is the damage to retina by ionizing radiation.Commonly follows brachytherapy,a common modality to treat choroidal melanoma
AIM:To study the features of RR including site, time of onset, grading, treatment and final outcome after plaque brachytherapy in choroidal melanoma patients.
MATERIALS:Retrospective review of 46 choroidal melanoma patients who underwent plaque brachytherapy from Jan 2005-15 was done.17 had RR during follow up.
RESULTS:Of the 46 treated eyes,RR developed in 36.9%(17).Mean time of onset was 2.5-3 years.RR was graded as mild, moderate severe with/without maculopathy.6 had moderate,11 had severe RR.14 with maculopathy were treated with anti-VEGF.Optic atrophy seen in 8,cataract in 12,liver metastasis in 2 patients.Final vision worsened in 12,remained unchanged in 5 patients.1 required enucleation,16/17 eyes were salvaged
CONCLUSION:36.9% had RR by 10 years.Salvage rate was 94.1% but significant number had drop in final visual acuity.
