VT29-A Novel Approach to the Management of Severe Facial Disfigurement in Neurofibromatosis Type 1

Dr.Viji Rangarajan

A 12 year old female presented with progressive drooping of left upper eye lid since birth. She had neurofibroma of left upper eyelid which was floppy and distended and also lateral canthal displacement. She had poor levator function of less than 4mm.Reconstructive eyelid surgery with transverse palpebral resection of upper eyelid and lateral canthal attachement of tarsal plates to periosteum was done.Ptosis correction was done one month later by frontalis sling surgery using silicon rod by Fox pentagon method. Post operatively the appearance of the patient was markedly improved to provide functional and aesthetic benefit. Surgery tailored according to clinical characteristics of individual patient can enhance acceptable outcomes even in challenging neurofibromatosis cases with severe facial disfigurement.
