PURPOSE: To determine the visual and anatomical outcome of patients who underwent pars plana lensectomy (PPL) with concurrent flapless, sutureless and glueless scleral-fixated intraocular lens (SFIOL) for nucleus drop during cataract surgery. METHODS: In a retrospective case series, 32 patients (32 eyes) who underwent PPL with SFIOL for nucleus drop during cataract surgery in the same day between January 2011 and March 2016 were enrolled. Demographics, risk factors, pitfalls of the cataract surgery, final visual acuity and complications post vitreo-retinal intervention were charted during the follow-up. RESULTS: The incidence of nucleus drop was 0.07%. The final visual acuity was 6/12 or better in 25 eyes (78%). Poor visual prognostic factors included corneal decompensation, diabetic maculopathy, amblyopia etc.
CONCLUSION: In the absence of capsular support, PPL with concurrent SFIOL offers a good visual outcome and quicker visual rehabilitation sans the need for a second surgery.
