objective:study to evaluate the need of an IOP lowering topical agent following Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy in patients with PCO
methods:50 patients with mild to moderate PCO were randomozed into two groups, one group was prescribed brimonidine(0.15) at the end of the procedure with loteprednol(0.5) in tapering doses.other group was prescribed only loteprednol in tapering doses.IOP was measured using applanation tonometer just before,on next day,day7,14 subsequently.patients with known history of glaucoma or ocular hypertension or steroid responder or with history of complicated cataract surgery were excluded.laser was fired with attenuator at 1(1mj)and 6-8 shots in cross-hair fashion.
results:day 1 showed a mean increase ~4.5(2-7 mmhg) in group without IOP lowering agent against a mean increase of 2.8(1-4 mmhg) in control group. IOP reached normal levels on day7 and 14 in both groups
conclusion:IOP lowering agents are not required in YAG laser capsulotomy if cases are selected properly.
