FP1768 : Effect of Topical 5% Phenylephrine in Blood Pressure During Cataract Surgery

Aim: To study the systemic effects of topically applied 5% phenylephrine.
Method: 20 patients undergoing topical cataract surgery were divided into two groups.

Group 1 consisted of 10 Hypertensives who were taking antihypertensive medications. The pupil was dilated using topical Tropicamide 0.8% and 5% Phenylephrine eye drop three times in 15 minutes interval. The patients blocked the lacrimal drainage system themselves by digital compression.

Group 2 consisted of 10 Hypertensives who had not taken their last dose of antihypertensive medicine. The pupil was dilated using topical Tropicamide 0.8% and 5% Phenylephrine eye drop three times in 15 minutes interval. The patients blocked the lacrimal drainage system themselves by digital compression.
Preoperative blood pressure (BP) was noted and BP was noted intra operative and post operatively also.

Result: No statistically and clinically significant increase in blood pressure was seen.
