Materials & methods -Retrospective analysis of cornea transplant in private eye institute in association with NGO from 2005 January-2016 May.Eye bank maintained in association with NGO,surgery performed free of cost.Data analyzed regarding cost effectiveness,infrastructure required& outcome of surgery performed from December 2013 to May 2016.
Results–Eye donations increased from 32 in 2005 to 224 in 2015,transplants from 16 to 82. Programme has been cost-effective & successful in terms of number of surgeries & outcomes.120 eyes outcomes were analyzed & 78% optical and 59% therapeutic keratoplasty eyes had clear grafts at 1year.Average best corrected vision was 6/18.Major complications were failed graft,infection, rejection.
Conclusion–Social entrepreneurship is a feasible model to turn tide of corneal blindness. Corneal diseases are mostly found in low socioeconomic strata.Successful utilization of this model can help provide quality cornea care &reduce burden on government institute.
