FP21 : Awareness and Perception of Eye Donation Among Interns in A Medical College Hospital

Purpose:To study awareness&perception of eye donation among interns posted to Dept of Ophthal.Materials:Cross-sectional study-among 100interns over period of 12mnths.Interns were asked to fill questionnaire-demographics,awareness regarding eye donation,reasons for willingness to donate/not donate eyes,source of information.Results:Majority(95%)were aware that eyes can be donated after death& that it is for noble cause,but only 60% knew that ideal time for donating eyes is within 6hrs of death.75% of interns were willing to donate eyes after death,&ophthalmology posting during undergraduate training&mass-media played a major role in creating awareness.Major reasons for refusal to donate eyes include dislike of separating eyes from body(10%),religious restrictions(15%),&unsuitability to donate eyes due to ocular diseases/surgeries/systemic diseases(3%).Conclusion:Majority of interns were aware of eye donation,were willing to donate eyes after death. Awareness to be created in society.
