Aim = To report wide spectrum of clinical presentations and treatment profile of caterpillar hair induced ophthalmitis (CHIO) in a tertiary eye care centre in India.
Methods = A retrospective analysis of electronic medical record of all cases of CHIO, who presented between July 2013- March 2016. Twenty six eyes of 25 patients were included.
Results = Among all patients, two were of pediatrics age group. Most common presentation was foreign body sensation followed by redness of eyes . Out of total 26 eyes, 14 presented with type 3 CHIO. Four eyes had vision of < 20/20. Surgical intervention was required in 2 eyes, which included Penetrating keratoplasty and pars plana vitrectomy with epiretinal membrane removal.
Conclusion= Clinical presentation of CHIO is variable. Migration of hair into posterior segment may lead to a devastating ocular morbidity.
