A sample of 58 eyes of 36 patients assessed between the time period of August 2010 to October 2011 were prospectively analysed to assess the conjunctiva using impression cytology. The cytological examination of impression samples in pterygium cases shows that there was a 47% incidence of T2 pterygium with 60% showing grade 3 squamous metaplasia with 60% showing grade 2 goblet cell density. The impression cytology in VKC reveals that there is a 43.3% incidence on palpebral from of VKC with an increase in grade 1 squamous metaplasia with eyes showing equal number of mild snd severe forms of inflammation with high goblet cell density. In cases of OSSN an equal gender predilection with a 53.8% incidence of OSSN in the nasal quadrant with squamous metaplasia, dyskeratosis in 3 cases.A larger study with impression cytology of the normal eye as a control may enhance our understanding of normal and abnormal cytology in various conditions thereby having a database which will aid in its management
