Purpose: To report a case of Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) ocular infection after corneal collagen crosslinking (CXL)
Method: A 12 year old female presented with full thickness corneal infiltrate with hypopyon 3 days post collagen crosslinking (CXL) procedure for progressive keratoconus. Corneal scrape was sent for culture and was positive for Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) exhibiting a strong resistance to antibiotics and susceptible to only Vancomycin, Gentamicin, Linezolid, Teicoplanin. Topical antibiotics were modified and keratitis resolved over 6 weeks resulting in a vascularized corneal scar.
Conclusion: Though safe and effective procedure, CXL is not devoid of infective complications. Also the possibility of mutations in S. aureus species due to UV-A radiations leading to resistant infection needs to be evaluated.
