Purpose : To study ocular manifestations of various mucocutaneous disorders.
Materials:A prospective study was conducted in Dept of Ophthal in a medical college hospital,over a period of 1yr,on patients presenting with mucocutaneous syndromes.Patients with co-morbid diseases like diabetes& hypertension wherein ocular involvement likely-excluded.
Results : Of 100 patients,65%-eye involvement.Majority 21-30yrs age;especially males.Commonest was herpes(37%).Ocular involvement-in 69% herpetic patients,79% patients with leprosy.Periorbital vesicles was commonest ocular manifestation in herpes;madarosis in leprosy.Economic blindness was seen in 6,visual handicap in 20.Common cause of visual impairment-corneal implications.During next 3mnths,25% developed ocular complications-dry eye(10%),corneal scar(5%)&vascularisation,trichiasis,symblepharon(8%),ankyloblepharon(15%).
Conclusion : Careful eye examination during early period of skin reaction&early detection of ocular complications improves outcome.
