Dr. Mihir Trilok Kothari, K08617, Vivek Rathod

Aim : To report the efficacy of 1% Atropine eye drops in Progressive myopia. Methods: Children with progressive simple myopia with a progression of > 0.3D/6 months and BCVA >6/9 using 1% atropine eye drops for a minimum duration of 1 year were included.

Results : 60 eyes of 30 children aged 10 years (5-16) were included. 15 were males. Average myopia at presentation was -6D. Minimum follow up duration was 13 months, mean follow up was 2 years. ATROPINE REDUCED THE PROGRESSION FROM 0.6D/YEAR TO 0.01D/YEAR (P=0.003). The effectiveness had no correlation with age/gender (r = 0 and p = 0.6). In 18 patients, once at night dose was not effective. 17 had to use it in the morning and 1 had to use twice a day. 1 child discontinued the use after 1 year due to severe light sensitivity.

Conclusion : 1% atropine eye drops was very effective in retarding the progressive myopia. However, MORE THAN 50% NEEDED TO USE IT IN THE DAY TIME TO EXPERIENCE THE BENEFIT.
