FP183 : Orbital Vicarious Menstruation

Dr. Viji Rangarajan, R11225

A 24 year old woman presented with history of recurrent swelling of right eyelids, redness & protrusion of eyeball since the age of 12.The episodes were cyclical & occurred in conjunction with timing of her menstrual cycle & lasted for 4 to 5 days.Extensive serological & imaging workup ruled out other potential causes of recurrent proptosis.MRI revealed endometriosis of left ileac fossa & polycystic ovaries.
The patient was diagnosed with Orbital Vicarious Menstruation. She was treated with oral contraceptives and she showed marked clinical improvement.

The case presented here is extremely rare and unique in that it may represent the presence of hormone receptors or endometrial tissue in periocular or orbital tissues leading to recurrent proptosis
