FP20 : A Study on Open Globe Injuries in Children – The 3 ‘E’s [Epidemiology, Etiology&Exit Visual Outcome

Purpose : To evaluate epidemiological characteristics,etiological factors,visual outcome,type of injury,prognostic factors of open globe injuries in kids.

Materials : Cross-sectional study was conducted on kids<16 years of age with open globe injuries,in ophthal OPD,over 8 mnth.Data was collected on demographics,place&object causing injury,type&severity,initial&final(16wk postop)Vn,surgery done,cause of Vn impairment.Kids with open globe injuries repaired elsewhere-excluded.

Result : Of 112 patients,26.8%-kids.Of this,19-open globe injuries,18 met inclusion criteria.Mean age-9.5yrs,majority males.55.6%-in rural areas.Most injuries-while playing outdoors(44.4%.All injuries-from sharp objects.Corneoscleral laceration+/-iris prolapse-most common injury,treated by primary repair.On presentation,61.1%-visually impaired,vision improved in most at 16wk.Commonest cause of visual impairment-corneal scar.

Conclusion : More public health efforts should be geared to prevent potential causes of ocular trauma.
