Purpose: To evaluate the correlation between Mean Platelet Volume (MPV) and retinal vein occlusion (RVO).
Materials and Methods: A prospective cohort study was conducted between two groups of 52 patients each: one with established RVO & the other group of normal age and gender matched healthy subjects as control. After comprehensive ophthalmic workup and evaluation of cardiovascular status, blood samples were collected and MPV was analyzed as per the standard protocol.
Results: The mean age of the study: control group was 50.98: 52.69 years. Male to female ratio was 33:19 & 38:14 in the study and control group respectively. The mean MPV observed in the study group was 10.40fl which was not statistically significant than the values observed in the control group (mean 10.24 fl)(t-test, p value 0.838).
Conclusion: This study indicates no association between MPV and RVO. Hence, MPV values cannot be used as a potential prognostic biomarker of retinal vein occlusion.
