Posterior capsular opacification (PCO) is the commonest cause of diminution of vision after cataract surgery. This video shows an ingenious foldable hydrophobic acrylic ring to prevent PCO. PCO ring is 0.4mm thick with an outer and inner diameter of 9mm and 6.5mm respectively. The ring is inserted into the bag after the implantation of the intraocular lens (IOL) and snugly fits under the anterior capsular margin, pushing the IOL posteriorly. This brings the IOL optic in close apposition with the posterior capsule thus eliminating space for the proliferation of lens epithelial cells to form PCO. It strengthens the capsular bag and helps in achieving good centration of the IOL irrespective of the material and design of the IOL or the shape and size of the anterior capsulorrhexis. This ring may provide an ideal one stop solution for cataract surgery in community ophthalmology by eliminating the costs, complications associated with interventions for PCO and the need to revisit the hospital.
