FP1401 : PRIMARY NON-ENDOSCOPIC ENDONASAL VERSUS EXTERNAL DCR FOR NASOLACRIMAL DUCT OBSTRUCTION IN CHILDREN

Dr. Nandini Bothra (B15682)

Purpose: To compare the outcomes of non-endoscopic endonasal (NEN-DCR) and external dacryocystorhinostomy (EXT-DCR) in NLDO in children.

Methods: A retrospective comparison of all consecutive age-gender matched group of children (≤14 years) after NEN-DCR and EXT-DCR between 2010 and 2016 was done. Primary outcome measure was relief from epiphora (functional).

Results: Fifty-four children were included with 27 children (30 eyes) in NEN-DCR and 27 (28 eyes) in the EXT-DCR group. Adjuvant mitomycin C (MMC) 0.04% was more often used in NEN-DCR group (18/30 vs 6/28). Median follow-up was comparable (6.1±2.8 vs 4.7±1.8 months) in both groups. Functional success was poorer after primary NEN-DCR compared to EXT-DCR (24/30 vs. 27/28 eyes; p= 0.06, Fisher exact test). All primary surgical failures (6+1) had received MMC of which 6 children were asymptomatic after revision.

Conclusion:Primary EXT-DCR has better outcome in NLDO in children than NEN-DCR. MMC does not enhance outcome in children
