Purpose: To report outcome of anterior stromal puncture (ASP) with amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) in the management of painful bullous keratopathy (BK)
Method: A retrospective review of 22 eyes between 2012 and 2015. Epithelial debridement was followed by ASP and the amniotic membrane was stabilized with 10/0 nylon suture and bandage contact lens. During a mean follow-up of 7.27± 4.36 months symptoms, corneal findings, and visual acuity were evaluated
Results: The mean age was 61.90 ± 22.46 years with diagnosis of pseudophakic BK in 14, aphakic BK in 4, failed graft in 4eyes. 16 patients (72.7 %) had complete relief while corneal epithelial healing was complete in 20(90.90%) eyes 1 month postoperative. Visual acuity decreased in 6 (27.27 %), and remained the same in 16 (72.72 %) patients. Infection was noted in one patient (4.54 %).
Conclusions: ASP combined with
AMT is safe and effective, provides symptomatic relief in patients with BK, and promotes epithelial healing in BK
