Purpose- Study prevalence of ocular and orbital manifestations in AML and ALL patients.
Method- 50 patients (32 AML and 18 ALL patients) underwent systemic and ocular examination and haematological work up.
Results – Ocular lesions were noted more commonly in patients with AML (65.6%) as compared to ALL (27.7%). Retinal haemorrhage was commonest presentation (36%) followed by subconjunctival haemorrhage (18%) and cotton wool spots (6%). Lid ecchymosis, optic nerve oedema, cavernous sinus thrombosis and chronic uveitis were noted in 4% patients each. Optic nerve infiltration, masquerade syndrome and optic atrophy were present in 2% patients each.
Conclusion- High prevalence of ocular manifestations necessitates routine ophthalmic examination in patients of acute leukaemia.
