Self-medication is defined by the WHO as the selection and use of medicines by individuals to treat self-recognized illnesses or symptoms.
A questionnaire-based study of 101 patients aged >10years specially prepared by the authors collected demographic data, type of medication used, the reasons which led to this practice,their knowledge about the components of the product or its adverse reactions,and the reasons for not consulting specialist prior to using the medication.
36.73% of women and 32.69% of males admitted self-medicating,In age factor, greater tendency was seen to self medicate among elder population. Source of recommendation was stated to be a pharmacist 34.65%.Lack of knowledge about the medications used to self-medicate was in 34.65% of individuals. Self-medication habits found mostly in individuals with lower educational level(74.28%).
Lots of eye drops are obtainable without prescription and a high percentage of self-medicated patients ignore possible side effects.
