PURPOSE :To find out the most common etiologies of corneal disease and the risk factors associated with worse visual outcomes in Greater Noida, UP..
METHODS :This observational, cross-sectional study evaluated 105 consecutive patients seen at the Ophthalmic outpatient Department of Sharda Medical college between June 2014-April 2015.. Ocular history, demographic information, and ocular use of traditional medicine were recorded and analyzed. Causes of infectious keratitis were diagnosed clinically. Visual impairment was categorized as per World Health Organization criteria.
RESULTS: Forty three patients (40%) had noninfectious corneal diseases, most commonly corneal opacity (n=27) corneal trauma (n=15) dry eye syndrome ( n=6), Sixty two patients had infectious keratitis of whom Fungal Keratitis was the most frequent cause ( n=32), followed by bacterial ( 20) and viral keratitis (11) Older age and rural residence had increased were having worse visual impairment.
