FP1456 : Centurion Syndrome: Clinical Profile and Management

Dr. Abhilasha Maheshwari, M15782, Dr. Santosh G Honavar

Purpose:To describe clinical features and surgical outcomes of Centurion syndrome.

Methods:Retrospective review of 8 patients with Centurion syndrome. The position of punctum, prominent nasal bridge and placement of medial canthal tendon(MCT) were noted. Patients underwent MCT release, punctoplasty, dacryocystorhinostomy(DCR) or combination of these.

Results:Mean age of onset was 13 ± 7y. All patients were males with prominent nasal bridge and anteriorly displaced medial canthus. Lower punctum was displaced out of the tear lake in 6 (75%). All patients had positive FDDT and 7 had patent syringing. MCT release was performed in 2, in combination with punctoplasty in 5 and DCR in 1. Symptoms of watering resolved in 7(87%). 1 patient undergoing MCT release had persistent but asymptomatic epiphora.

Conclusion:Centurion syndrome is characterized by abnormal anterior insertion of MCT. Patients have unexplained epiphora, surgically treatable by MCT release with or without punctoplasty or DCR.
