Purpose : To describe the spectrum of injury following flying scrap metal string to the eye.
Methods: : Half-a-metre long rusted metal string struck the right eye of 60year old male following lowering the window shield on national highway. String was noticed to pierce the right upper eyelid through the tarsus, limbus, lens and the mid-vitreous. Primary care was provided where the string was cut near to the eyelid. CT scan imaging was done. Patient subsequently underwent Pars plana lensectomy , parsplana vitrectomy, silicon oil injection and later on he underwent silicon oil removal with secondary scleral fixated IOL.
Results :Patient retained vision of 6/18(p) with clear cornea, attached retina and laser scars with good foveal reflex.
Conclusions :Primary care is very crucial in the management of penetrating injury. Prompt management can be very gratifying.
