Road traffic accidents are a gift of urbanization,their sequel can lead to permanent blindness.Ocular morbidity gets overshadowed by other serious neurological and orthopedic injuries.A retrospective study was carried out to highlight this fact.
AIM:To study the incidence and on vision pattern of ocular morbidity in road traffic accidents and their Impact.
Material and Method:Records of cases of ocular trauma during the last five years were reviewed.
Results: Out of 7267 patients of ocular trauma 2253 (31% ) were due to road traffic accidents.Ocular morbidity due to road traffic accidents has increased over five years from 17% to 36%.Victims were mainly in the age group between 15 and 45 years , a preponderance of male (76.8%) and urban dwellers(88%) was noted . Lid and adenexel injuries were more common 1210 (53% ).Close globe 790(35%) and open globe 253(11%) but open globe injuries had poor prognosis . Out of them 32.8% were uniocular and 10.2% were completely blind.
