Dr. Anup Kumar Goswami, G08117, Dr. Nidhi, Dr. Shweta Gaur

A seven day old neonate,1.8kg weight, gestational age 34 weeks, was examined on receiving a bedside call from neonatal ICU for some yellowish matter coming out of left eye(LE).LE showed 8mm size perforation of cornea.Lens was extruded & seen lying on bedside.Conjunctiva showed xerosis, mild hyperaemia with discharge.Red glow was absent.Right Eye(RE) conjunctiva was xerotic.Rest was normal in RE.Topical Moxifloxacin started in LE and eye patched.Lubricant ointment started in RE.Patient referred for therapeutic keratoplasty to salvage globe.Corneal perforation in the perinatal period is rare.Risk factors are low birth weight, systemic infection, birth trauma and exposure keratopathy. It is hypothesized that maternal malnutrition & defective corneal morphogenesis may have contributed in present case. Conclusion:Use of prophylactic anti glaucoma medication in premature neonates is proposed and needs analysis.Awareness in paediatricians of this potential complication is vital to prevent blindness.
