A prospective cohort study was done to evaluate incidence of ROP, requiring observation or treatment, in babies beyond the AAP screening criteria of birth weight of 1500 grams and/or gestational age of 32 weeks, over a period of 2 years at a tertiary care hospital. All premature infants < 37 weeks of gestational age, admitted in the NICU over 2 years were screened for ROP at 3-6 weeks of chronological age.
A total of 242 babies were screened. 75 (30.99%) babies developed ROP of which 17 babies lay beyond the screening criteria. 11 of the affected babies required treatment (type 1 ROP), 2 of which lay beyond the screening criteria. A need to revise the screening criteria is required, specific to regional developments in understanding and management of ROP.
