Dr. Surbhi Agrawal, A18211, Dr. Anshu Sahai

A prospective randomized single blinded study was carried out in 80 eyes of 80 patients operated for primary nasal pterygium. In group 1(40 patients) the conjunctival autograft was attached to the sclera using autologous blood and in group 2(40 patients) with absorbable sutures(8–0 Vicryl). Patients were followed up to 6 months.Student- t test was used for statistical analysis. Post-operative discomfort (pain, watering and foreign body sensation) , complications and recurrence rate were compared and evaluated.Post operative discomfort was significantly low in group 1 (p< 0.05). No graft was lost in either group. Graft retraction was seen in 3 patients in group 1 (7.5%) and in 2 patients in group 2(5%). Graft dehiscence was seen in 4 patients in group 1(10%). 1 patient in group 2 showed granuloma formation. 2 patients in group 1 and 3 patients in group 2 showed recurrence after 3 months. Sutureless and glue free conjunctival autograft technique is easy, safe and effective.
