Purpose:To evaluate spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) changes in central retina and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) patients.
Methods:Data on visual acuity, severity of sickle cell retinopathy, macular volume scans and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness on SD-OCT were analysed from 105 eyes of 56 consecutive patients referred for screening for SCD.The retinal and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness of eyes with SCD were also compared with age and ethnicity matched controls.
Results:The temporal total and inner retinal thickness, macular volume were significantly lower in patients with SCD compared with age, gender and ethnicity matched controls.Thinning of the nasal retinal nerve fiber layer quadrant was observed in eyes with proliferative retinopathy (P < 0.001); however, no retinal nerve fiber layer thickness difference was observed after age correction (P > 0.05).
