FP331 : Clinical Profile of Herpes Zoster Ophthalmicus in Southern Odisha-Study of 68 Case Series

Herpes zoster opthalmicus (HZO) is an ocular emergency since it can lead to substantial visual disability in productive age group.

Aim – To identify the pattern of ocular manifestation in HZO.

Material & Methods – A cross-sectional study of 68 cases (M-37,F-31) aged 15-75 yrs ,mostly above 40 yrs(mean age-48.7 ± 18.5 yrs) of clinically diagnosed HZO taken from Jan-Dec,15. All underwent complete eye evaluation .

Results – ocular affection found in 77.94%. Lid & adnexal findings (45.8 %) were most common ocular affection followed by conjunctivitis (41.1 %). Corneal complication seen in 38.2 % of cases, uveitis in 19.1%,19.3% young adults(<35 yrs) were HIV+ & post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) & secondary glaucoma each in 5.8%.Conclusion-Eyelid & ocular adnexal affection was common in patients with HZO followed by corneal complication & uveitis.

Conclusion – Awareness of ocular affection is occasionally sight threatening,among the HZO patients & multidisciplinary approach should be emphasized.
