FP438 : A Study of the Association of Diabetes, Anthropometric Risk Factors and Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy has become a main cause of vision loss and blindness worldwide therefore focus on early prevention of diabetic retinopathy and the benefit of controlling modifiable risk factors has become increasingly important.A study was conducted on 150 patients of diabetes mellitus to determine whether obesity is independently associated as a risk factor in the development of diabetic retinopathy in both type 1 and type 2 diabetic patients.Body weight,Hip circumference ,Waist to hip ratio and BMI of all the patients was recorded.Detailed ophthalmic evaluation was done and patients were divided into five groups as no DR,mild DR,mild to moderate NPDR,severe NPDR,PDR.Statistical analysis was carried out by using One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA).A p value of <0.05 was considered as significant.
It was concluded that severity of diabetic retinopathy has positive co-relation with weight,waist circumference and BMI.
