AIM : To evaluate short term outcomes in patients underwent TPK as the primary surgical intervention, when indicated in the management of fungal keratitis. The primary outcomes assessed were eradication of infection & retention of globe integrity, while the secondary outcomes included graft clarity, visual outcome & complications.
MATERIALS METHODS : This is a prospective, observational study of 28 patients with fungal keratitis who underwent TPK as the primary surgical intervention.Fungal keratitis was diagnosed clinically & confirmed by KOH staining/ culture of corneal scrapings.TPK was done whenever indicated. The patients were followed up for at least 6 months.
RESULTS : Eradication of infection & anatomical success achieved in 82.1%,clear graft 10.7%,VA >6/60 3.6%,graft rejection 53.6%,graft failure 7.1%,secondary glaucoma 28.6%,cataract 10.7%.
CONCLUSION : TKP alone is effective in eradication of infection & anatomical success. However multiple interventions needed for acceptable final outcome.
