FP583 : Role of Koh Wet Mount & Gram’s Staining: Diagnosis and Treatment of Corneal Ulcers in North Bihar

Role of easily accessible bed side tests KOH wet mount & gram’s staining is crucial in less developed areas where recent advances in treatment for corneal ulcer are not present.

Aim: To study the incidence of bacterial and fungal corneal ulcer in North Bihar during harvesting season by identifying causative agent and to reduce morbidity of patients by early and radical treatment.

Methods: This was an institution based study (which caters major population of north Bihar), wherein 40 randomly chosen patients of corneal ulcer during month of Nov- April, were selected.
KOH wet mount and Gram’s staining was performed with corneal scraping for identifying type of ulcer and data were analyzed statistically using proper statistical test.

Results: 40% of them were found to be of fungal origin; 27.5% of bacterial origin

Conclusion: After knowing the etiology treatment given are more radical; hence better visual outcome is achieved.
