FP876 : Madar Juice Keratitis with Corneal Infiltrate – A Rare Presentation

PURPOSE:
Calotropis procera is a member of Asclepiadeae family and scientific name of Sodom apple or Madar shrub.Ocular injuries caused by accidental contact of the latex is common.Spectrum includes conjunctival congestion,epithelial defect,mild to severe corneal edema with descemet’s folds,iridocyclitis,secondary glaucoma.
METHODS:
Case report with unusual presentation of madar juice keratitis as corneal infiltrate.A 50 year old female presented with history of accidental fall of madar juice in left eye.Visual acuity was 1/60.Examination shows congestion with stromal edema and epithelial defect.Patient was started on antibiotic eyedrops.Two days later patient presented with pain and examination showed stromal infiltrate.
RESULTS:
Stromal infiltrate was non scrappable.Infiltrate resolved with use of antibiotic and antifungal eyedrops.Visual acquity was 6/9,scarring was observed.
CONCLUSION:
Madar juice keratitis with corneal infiltrate is very rare and responds with timely treatment
