Ocular infections like corneal ulcers, endophthalmitits and cellulitis are ocular emergencies for which treatment must be started immtely. These can be caused by a variety of microorganisms which clinicians must be aware. Microbiology laboratory facilities are either not available or are not oriented to the needs of the ophthalmologist. Often smears and cultures are negative which may lead to a dilemma in the treatment. This course will highlight the optimum usage of minimum microbiology laboratory facilities as well as advanced laboratory support. It will highlight the principles and interpretation of microbiology results, how to send ocular samples and what tests to request. The significance of unusual organisms, the importance of an initial microscope smears examination as well as negative results will be discussed. Ocular microbiologists, cornea and uvea specialists will present both the clinical and laboratory perspective on best practices in the management of ocular infection.
