VT173 -New design of Pupil dilator for insertion through 1.4mm opening for nondilating pupil during surgery

Dr.Satish Chander Gupta, Dr.Abhishek Dagar

Purpose: To demonstrate the advantages of a new design pupil expansion ring.

Methods: The new design differs from Malyugin ring in respect to the opening of the coils at the four corners of the square device. All the four corners are provided with a coil of thread in such a way that, at no adjacent corner the thread crosses over in vertical axis. This ensures that the coils on any given side open in the same plane and there is no pinching of pupil margin during its use. Results: The pupil expander could be inserted through 1.4 mm (20 Gauge) incision using a micro forceps or a lens manipulator. It could also be injected into the anterior chamber using a foldable IOL injector through 2.2 mm incision. We got a 5.5mm square pupil, without damage to the pupil margin.

Conclusion: The new design Pupil Expansion ring can be inserted through as small as 1.4 mm(20G) incision to give 5.5mm square pupil.
