AIM:To study the factors which determine postoperative visual acuity(PVA) in patients who had PCR.
PATIENTS AND METHODS:Retrospective review of case records of patients who had PCR during surgery over a period of 4 years (2012-16),with a minimum follow up of 1 month was done, in a tertiary eye hospital. Various demographic, pre- & intraoperative variables were compared with grades of PVA using Chi-square & ANOVA test.
RESULTS:Of 163 cases, postoperative vision was ≥6/18 in 66.3 %, 6/18 – 6/60 in 21.5% and <6/60 in 12.2%. Type of cataract, type of surgery, method of IOL implantation, secondary surgical procedures had a statistically significant impact on the final visual outcome (p<0.05), while there was no statistically significant association with gender, step when PCR occurred, pre-existing complications, vitreous loss and experience of the surgeon.
CONCLUSION:The type of cataract, the mode of surgery and IOL placement are the major determinants of the final visual outcome after PCR.
