Aim : To determine the amount of myopic shift in children after cataract surgery with IOL implantation and to evaluate success in achieving the target refraction
Method : A prospective randomised trial was conducted among 25 children operated between 2014 to 2016. Reduction of IOL power at the time of surgery was aimed for residual hyperopia. Immediate post op refraction was performed on day 1 followed by repeat refraction after 3 months and 1 year. Visual rehabilitation was provided accordingly.
Result : Among the 25 children operated 20 had bilateral cataract . Post-op 10 children needed occlusion therapy for amblyopia along with optical correction of which 6 children responded with improvement in vision better than 6/18.At the end of two years it was noted that children < 5 years of age and those having unilateral cataract experienced higher post-op myopic shifts (mean=- 2.0 D) and larger mean rate of refractive change per year (- 1.0 D/year) compared with older children (- 0.05/year).
