Abstract: The Beckman initiative for ARMD, resulted in a risk score on colour photos (CP) for early and intermediate AMD. It was the purpose to apply this to CP and also on OCT.
Methods: A total of 187 eyes (91 of females) were included. the mean age was 66.17+9.34 yrs. On CP and OCT The risk score was 0 for no changes, 1 for drusens >125u, 1 for pigmentary changes, and 0.5 for drusens 63-125u. Maximum risk score could be 2 for each eye and 4 for both eyes.
Results: On CP 18 eyes had early AMD and 169, intermediate AMD. On OCT 8 had early and 179 intermediate. Risk score on CP was 0 in 2, 0.50 in 12, 1.00 in 126 and 2.00 in 46 eyes. On OCT it was 0 in 6, 0.50 in 9, 1.00 in 96, 1.5 in 2 and 2 in 74 eyes. Mean score on CP was 1.20+0.48 and on OCT was 1.34+0.57. The scoring was significantly higher on OCT (P=0.002)
Conclusions: Risk scoring applied to both CP and to OCT may offer some advantages and minimise the possibility of missing out on risk related features of ARMD.
