Aim: To compare anatomical and functional outcomes of pars plana vitrectomy(PPV) alone vs PPV combined with scleral buckling(SB) in patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment(RRD)
Methods: Prospective randomized controlled trial was carried out on 14 patients with RRD, equally divided into 2 groups. Group A underwent 23G PPV alone. Scleral buckling was carried out in addition in group B. Visual acuity(VA), intraocular pressure(IOP) and retinal reattachment was assessed at 1day, 1week, 1, 3 and 6months
Results: At 6 months retinal reattachment rate was 85.71% in group A and 100 % in group B. VA improved by ≥2 lines in 85.71% in group A and 71.42% in group B. Maximum IOP in both groups was 46mmHg, well controlled with medication, not requiring any intervention
Conclusion: Though anatomical outcome was better in group B, functional outcomes were comparable in both the groups. Further studies with larger sample and longer follow up are required to elucidate any significant difference
