PURPOSE : To study the prevalence of HIV RETINOPATHY in HIV/AIDS patients. • To diagnose sight threatening complications in HIV infection and provide appropriate available medical treatment.
METHODS AND MATERIALS :A minimum of 200 cases of HIV infected and AIDS patients attending the Outpatient Department of Ophthalmology were selected for the study. Each patient was subjected to detailed history taking regarding the symptoms and duration of the disease. A careful and detailed examination of the eye was undertaken. Statistical analysis was done using Chi-square test.
RESULTS : HIV retinopathy was found in 9% of patients, followed by CMV retinitis in 6.5%.
CONCLUSION: All HIV/AIDS patients should undergo detailed ophthalmic examination as many of them could be asymptomatic. Similarly, HIV testing should be a mandatory part of the test when atypical or unusual ocular lesions are seen. This will help in earlier diagnosis and prompt treatment of these cases.
