The purpose of our study was to see the trends in cataract surgery in last 10 years (2006 – 2015) at tertiary centre.
This was a retrospective study of patients who underwent cataract surgery at tertiary centre in north west Rajasthan. Study period was from January 2006 to December 2015.
The parameters studied were: Age, Gender, Number of surgeries and Type of surgery (phacoemulsification or SICS) and Seasonal variations in cataract surgery.
Over the last 10 years a total of 21,307 patients were operated for cataract at the institute. Out of total, females were more (54.18%) than males(45.81%), most of the cataract subjects were above 60 years of age (61.57%). 71.32% patients underwent SICS while 28.68% patients underwent phacoemulsification. A definite seasonal variation was seen (54.80% patients were operated during winter and spring). ‘Year by year’ upward trend was seen in age-related cataract hospitalizations concurrent with a significant rise in phacoemulsification.
