Methods: Patients with dense cataract & iridofundal colobomas were operated for cataract by small incision cataract surgery (SICS) in which nucleotomy was done using metallic snare.Patients were reviewed for day 1,7,15 & 30 with special reference to corneal thickness, corneal edema and best corrected visual acuity. The intraoperative & post operative complications were noted.

Results: Out of 30 patients operated by such technique between April2014 – Mar2016, 26(86.6%) had 3+ corneal clarity . Twenty five (83.3%) had no IOP spike & corneal edema. The corneal edema resolved in all patients on follow up examination and the pachymetry became normal at 4 weeks of follow up in all patients.2 (6.6%) had PC rent during the procedure and 4 patients (13.3%) had zonular dialysis.

Conclusion: Snare nucleotomy is a safe technique to tackle dense cataract in patients with iridofundal colobomas preserving the cornea and the zonules, giving a safe, sutureless alternative to phacoemulsification.
