Purpose:-To study the incidence of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in neonatal intensive care units and obtain information about risk factors associated with ROP and treatment modalities.
Methods:-Premature infants born at 36weeks gestational age or younger or 2000gm. or smaller, were screened for retinopathy of prematurity. One thousand three hundred and fifty babies were screened for ROP between October 2012 to march 2016 at various neonatal intensive care units of central Karnataka. Screening done with RETCAM & indirect ophthalmoscope using 28D Volk lens under topical anaesthesia. Babies with ROP requiring treatment were given laser treatment, All babies were followed up till 40 weeks corrected gestation or until retina matured & further follow-up continued for those with ROP until it resolved.
Results:In 1350 premature neonates ROP was detected in 18.37%(248 infants). Most of the babies were in range of 26-34weeks of gestational age. Total 128 infants had stage 1or2,zone1 /zone 2 ROP, 40 infants h
